Project Introduction

Be Roo Smart was a local awareness and education campaign developed to support World Kangaroo Day 2025 in my local area, encouraging safer coexistence between people and kangaroos in the Blue Mountains region.

The project combined wildlife photography, graphic design, digital storytelling and community education to create accessible resources for local residents, helping raise awareness of the challenges faced by kangaroos living alongside expanding human environments.

The campaign included a dedicated website, educational resources and a printed flyer distributed to approximately 1,000 local households.

Understanding the Challenge

Kangaroos are a much-loved part of the Australian landscape, but living alongside wildlife brings challenges for both animals and people.

Be Roo Smart was created to provide practical information for local residents about sharing the landscape with kangaroos, with a focus on reducing risks associated with roads, pets, fencing and human-wildlife interactions.

The campaign aimed to make wildlife information easy to access and relevant to the local community.

Digital Education Platform

A dedicated Be Roo Smart website was developed as a central resource for the campaign.

The website brought together information about:

  • driving safely around wildlife

  • responsible pet ownership

  • wildlife-friendly fencing

  • supporting kangaroo habitat

  • what to do when wildlife needs help

Designed as a practical community resource, the website provided residents with accessible information beyond the campaign period.

(The website was created as a seasonal campaign resource for World Kangaroo Day 2025 and is no longer publicly available.)

Bringing Photography and Design Together

Be Roo Smart combined original wildlife photography with graphic design to create engaging educational resources that connected people with the animals they share their environment with.

Using photography captured in the local landscape, the project developed a visual identity that was approachable, informative and grounded in the real experiences of the community.

The campaign materials were designed to communicate important wildlife messages in a way that was accessible for households, families and visitors.

Connecting with the Community

To extend the campaign beyond digital channels, a printed flyer was designed and distributed to approximately 1,000 households across the local area.

The flyer provided a simple introduction to Be Roo Smart and directed residents to the online resources where they could learn more about living alongside kangaroos.

By combining printed materials with digital resources, the campaign aimed to reach people in the places where wildlife interactions occur, within their own communities.
