Project Introduction
In the Shadows is an ongoing photographic project exploring Australian wildlife through portraiture. By carefully shaping the balance of light and shadow, each image seeks to reveal the individuality, texture and quiet presence of the subject.
Rather than documenting wildlife alone, the series explores a more interpretive style of photography that invites viewers to pause and connect with familiar Australian species in a different way.
The Concept
Photography has the ability to do more than record a moment - it can influence how that moment is experienced.
In the Shadows explores how careful use of tone and contrast can simplify an image, drawing attention to the details that give each animal its unique character. By reducing visual distractions, the portraits encourage a slower, more contemplative way of observing wildlife.
An Evolving Collection
In the Shadows is a continuing body of work that will grow over time as new portraits and species are added.
The project is not defined by a single location or moment, but by a shared visual approach that explores the relationship between wildlife, light and perception. As the collection develops, it will become an evolving study of Australia's remarkable native fauna through portrait photography.
Developing the Portraits
Each photograph begins with an authentic wildlife encounter before being thoughtfully refined during post-processing.
Rather than changing the subject itself, tonal adjustments are used to guide the viewer's eye towards expression, texture and form. The aim is to create portraits that remain true to the animal while presenting it in a more intimate and artistic way.
Looking Ahead
In the Shadows is intended as a long-term creative exploration rather than a finished collection.
With each new portrait, the project continues to investigate how subtle changes in tone, light and composition can reveal new ways of seeing Australia's wildlife - celebrating not only the beauty of each species, but its individuality and presence.
